February 2021

About the Festival

Welcome to Paisley’s inaugural Book Festival. The event took inspiration from the 200th anniversary of the Paisley Radicals reflecting on their spirit with a programme of grassroots activism, new ideas and political conversation.

With many events for all the family: children, young adults and adults, there was something for everyone over the ten days of the Paisley Book Festival. Whilst some of these events were priced, many were free, and we tried wherever possible to make the festival as accessible as possible to the widest audience. Acclaimed writers from across the UK took part in discussion panels, masterclasses, workshops, storytelling and performances.

We hope you had fun with the family in Paisley this February, a fresh destination to enjoy reading with your children, and discover something new.

Radical Voices & Rebel Stories

Over the course of 10 days we brought you a huge range of events and activities for all ages, based on the central theme of Radical Voices and Rebel Stories. Throughout the festival, we heard from diverse creative voices, both local and from further afield, about what it means to be a rebel in today’s unequal society. Drawing on the Paisley Radicals of 1820 as our inspiration, the Paisley Book Festival explored how to honour their challenging ideas and vibrant energy 200 years later.

The present day is no less ridden with antiquated values and attitudes that need to be challenged and reimagined by new readers, thinkers and writers. Paisley Book Festival used the voices of the past as inspiration to pick a way forward, a space to discover new ideas and explore them through the powerful tool of words.
