When Leela Soma published her latest crime novel, Murder at the Mela, she was surprised that promotional posts on social media had been removed because key words in the book title were deemed to be potentially offensive. We are entering a new era where artificial intelligence and uncontrollable algorithms have the potential to censor the perspectives of writers using automated decision-making. How do we counter these forces, and how do we ensure that marginalised voices are not silenced by non-human interventions which fail to understand context, satire and humour? Featuring readings by Leela Soma, Harry Josephine Giles, Ruth Aylett, Dr Mario Relich and Dave Manderson and hosted by Scottish PEN, this event will provide a space to poke fun at the strange times we live in, while exploring artistic responses to important social issues.
